Understanding Edible Shimmer Products
Walk into any baking supply store and you’ll see a dizzying array of “edible glitter,” “luster dust,” “disco dust,” “sparkle dust,” and more. The terminology is confusing, and not all of these products are created equal — or even truly safe for consumption. Here’s what you need to know.
What Is Edible Luster Dust?
Edible luster dust (like our Luster Dust products) is made from mica-based pearlescent pigments. Mica is a naturally occurring mineral that’s ground into a fine powder and coated with food-grade colorants. The result is a powder that creates a true pearlescent shimmer — similar to how a pearl catches the light.
Key characteristics:
- Fine, powder-like texture
- Creates a smooth, pearlescent sheen
- Dissolves and suspends beautifully in liquids
- FDA compliant ingredients (mica + iron oxide)
- Tasteless and odorless
What Is “Edible Glitter”?
The term “edible glitter” can refer to several different products. Some are made from the same mica-based pigments as luster dust. Others are made from sugar, gum arabic, or other food ingredients shaped into reflective flakes. And some products marketed as “edible” are actually made from plastic or metallic materials that are NOT safe to eat.
The Safety Issue
In recent years, the FDA has raised concerns about products labeled “non-toxic” being marketed as “edible.” Non-toxic does NOT mean edible. A product can be non-toxic (won’t poison you) but still not be food-grade (not approved for consumption).
When choosing a shimmer product for food, always verify:
- The ingredients are FDA compliant for food use
- It explicitly states “food grade” or “edible” (not just “non-toxic”)
- The ingredients list includes recognized food-safe materials
Why We Use German Mica Pigments
Our Luster Dust products use mica-based pearlescent pigments imported from Germany. German pigment manufacturers adhere to some of the strictest quality and safety standards in the world. The result is a product that’s not only stunning to look at but genuinely safe for food use. All our products are FDA compliant, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, and non-GMO.
The Bottom Line
If you want a product that creates a beautiful pearlescent shimmer in drinks and on food, and you want to be confident it’s safe, choose a luster dust made from FDA compliant mica-based pigments. That’s exactly what our 13-color Luster Dust line delivers.
